Anyone who has spent at least one season cycling in our climate knows this dilemma perfectly well. You head out for a workout, it's 8–12°C outside, there's a chilly wind blowing, and there's a drizzle in the air. In a classic jersey and arm warmers, you'll freeze after the first 5 kilometers. On the other hand, in a thick winter jacket, you'll be stewing in your own juices after the first decent climb.

When you think of wool, what's the first thing that comes to mind? A heavy, itchy sweater from your grandma? If so, it's time to completely change your perspective. In the world of modern cycling – and especially on gravel and ultra-distance trails – there is only one queen. And that is merino wool. Although synthetics dominated cycling apparel for years, natural fibers are making a big comeback. Why are cyclists massively switching to merino, and why should you consider it too? Let's find out. The magic of nature: How does merino work? Merino sheep live in the extreme conditions of the New Zealand Alps, where summer temperatures reach +35°C and winter temperatures drop to -20°C. Their fleece had to evolve to adapt to these anomalies. The result? A fiber with amazing properties that is perfect for cycling. Top-level thermoregulation: Merino doesn't just warm you up on chilly mornings. When the temperature rises, the fibers wick away moisture and pleasantly cool the body. It's the ideal choice for fickle spring and summer weather. No more unpleasant odors: Synthetics can start to smell unpleasant after just a few kilometers. Merino has natural antibacterial properties. Even after a full day of intense riding in the peloton, your jersey will remain fresh. Unrivaled softness: Forget about itching. Merino fibers are incredibly thin and elastic, making the material feel as soft as silk against the skin. Gravel, bikepacking, and merino – the perfect duo It's no coincidence that the merino wool boom coincided with the explosion in popularity of gravel biking and bikepacking. When you embark on a multi-day trip with limited luggage, every gram counts. Instead of packing three different polyester jerseys, you can bring one good merino jersey. In the evening, just air it out, and in the morning, it's ready for the next ride. Less washing, less luggage, more freedom. Retro style and athletic character from Quest At Quest, we know perfectly well that cycling is a dynamic sport where apparel must work with the rider. Pure merino wool on a bike could lose its shape, which is why in our products, we always opt for a thoughtful mix of the highest quality merino wool with elastane. What does this mean in practice? We retain all the brilliant, natural thermoregulatory properties of merino, but thanks to the elastane blend, the jersey maintains its athletic character 100%. It fits the body perfectly, doesn't stretch, and loaded cycling pockets remain stable on the back without sagging. Our jerseys from the Geometric Retro Merino line are a tribute to cycling classics, enhanced with a modern, fitted cut and full functionality.
